6th National Scout Lore Quest Quiz 2006

Dear all,

The Singapore Scout Association is organising the 6th National Scout Lore Quest Competition 2006 with the theme, “Harmony in Diversity – The Scouting Way”. The theme reflects the importance Scouting, as an educational Movement, places on peace and racial harmony.

The theme is also chosen, as part of this year’s celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Asia-Pacific Scout Region. The final for this event is scheduled on 2 September 2006 at the Raffles Institution.

The TEAM from Arrow Scout Group comprises Shervin Lim, Yu Changda, Tan Xiu Qi, Lam Qi Koi and Kwok Kin Tuck.

The TEAM will sit for a 1.25 hrs written test consisiting of 5 sections with a total of 80 MCQ questions. The 5 sections are
1. Scouting History
2. Scouting Skills
3. Scouting in the Asia-Pacific Region
4. Scouting in Singapore
5. Racial Harmony & Emergency Preparedness

The best 5 TEAMS (out of about 25 registered TEAMS) will make it to the FINALS on the 26 Aug 2006. We are competing with schools like ACS (I), ACS(B), Catholic High, RI 01, RI 02. Anglican HIgh etc.

Arrow Scout Group was the CHAMPION for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Scout Lore Quest Quiz. We were 1st runner up for the 5th Scout Lore Quest. The Goal for the TEAM is to reach the Finals and to be the TOP Team this year.

The TEAM has been training very hard for this competition. (3 times a week, each session lasting abt 5 hrs) They are counting on the whole scout group for support and encouragement!

The TEAM will be camping overnight in school this Friday for the final preparation! Cheer the TEAM on as they prepare for this Sat Prelim rounds.

Scouting Thoughts - Are you proud of our troop?

Are you proud of our troop?

If you answered "yes" then
I would ask you a second question
how do you show that pride?

If you answered "no", whose fault is it?
Why aren't you proud of our troop
and have you tried to change what you're not proud of?

Pride is not an "in" word these days
but how else do you express the good feeling you receive
from seeing a group of young people working around at being Scouts?
When you're doing your best to meet the challenges and goals,
you should feel good about achieving them.
That is pride.

When you look sharp;
work well together for everyone's benefit;
are contributing to your community;
co-operating with your Leaders
and taking responsibility for your actions - you have something to be proud of.

Putting all of these accomplishments combined with fun and fellowship into the troop,
has given you tremendous spirit
and spirit is the way we show our pride.

I asked you at the start how you might show your pride - your spirit.
There are many examples.
You wear your uniform in a clean and proper state;
you arrive at meeting and events on time ready to do your part in making them successful;
you encourage others to join;
you continually think of interesting things to do and places to go as a troop;
you work on badges of all kinds;
you show respect for your Leaders at all levels
and you talk about your troop to other people,
telling them how good you've helped make it and the fun you have.

Our troop has spirit when we really want it to be the best
and work towards that goal.
Our troop has spirit when we look at ourselves
and talk freely about the bad things and the parts we don't like
but still stand firmly together.
Our troop has spirit when each of us cares about what it stands for
and do whatever we can each week to make the troop even better.
And our troop has the spirit when we have all of the above and still say "we have just begun".

MOE approval for Girls to join Scouts in 2007

Dear all,

finally MOE has agreed to allow Girls to Join Scouts in Secondary Schools! Watch out for some girl scouts next year. However, Arrow remains a "Boy" Scout Group. The Girls will do the same thing as the Boys i.e they will complete the same Scout Standard, Advanced Scout Standard, First Class and CCA. If the Girls are expected to do the same thing, it will be a shame if you guys cannot achieve the progress badges.

Principals of All Primary & Secondary Schools

RECRUITING GIRLS INTO SCOUTING

1 In recognizing the value of giving students flexibility and more choices in CCAs, the Ministry of Education has granted permission to the Singapore Scout Association (SSA) to recruit Girls into Scouting at the Primary and Secondary levels from January 2007. Currently, girls are already involved in the Scout's Ventures and Rovers programmes.

2 The SSA is registered under the World Organization of Scout Movement (WOSM) and data gathered from the international organisations indicates that there are a number of countries that have allowed girls to be recruited into scouting. The Scouting programme for both the boys and the girls is similar and hence the SSA will adopt an integrated approach to training similar to the model in use by the Red Cross and the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Similar to other uniformed groups, schools need to ensure that female officers are present for all overnight activities.

3 The Chief Commissioner of the SSA will be writing to schools officially on recruiting girls into scouting in due course.

Chief Commissioner's Award 2006

JOIN THE CELEBRATIONS, FLY OUR FLAG

Celebrating Singapore’s 41st birthday on 9 August 2006, the People’s Association (PA) and its grassroots organisations (GROs), together with The Singapore Scout Association (SSA), will rally Singaporeans together to join the National Day Celebration. PA’s slogan “Join the Celebrations, Fly Our Flag” is apt in promoting the display of the National Flag and inculcating a sense of patriotism among Singaporeans

In a first time collaboration, leading up to National Day 2006, the PA will be partnering with SSA to encourage Singaporeans to display the national flag with pride in July and August 2006. Scout units from primary and secondary schools are matched to the respective 84 constituencies where they are based. They will work closely with the grassroots organisations in their respective constituencies in this endeavour.

Starting 1 July 2006, grassroots leaders from Residents’ Committees (RCs), Neighbourhood Committees and Youth Executive Committees, and scouts will be going house-to-house in both private and HDB estates in their respective constituencies to encourage the residents to display the national flag as a way to celebrate National Day 2006. For residents who do not have a national flag, they can purchase it from the grassroots leaders and scouts during their house visits or at any Community Centre/Club or RC Centre.

Our Scout Group will work hand in hand with the Grassroots leaders / RC members of the Joo Chiat SMC and Simei Division. More details this Sat on the work schedule for the next 2 Sats. Parents are welcome to join us in the sales of the National Flag.

Meeting Outline for 27 May 2006

Dear all,

this Saturday is dedicated for Patrols to sell their Donation Draw Tickets to the public. You will go as a Patrol to nearby Housing estates for the sales. I urge all to take this opportunity to complete the 5 or 6 books allocated earlier. This might just be the only Saturday for the Patrol to go out together for the Sales.

Attire : Full Scout Uniform.
Reminder :

1. Bring along all your DDT books. If you have sold some books (complete books) beforehand, you are advised to submit the money and stub before heading out for the sales.
2. For ease in admin, I will only collect complete books sold at the end of the day.
3. If you are unable to make it for the afternoon part of the sales, do let your respective Patrol Leaders know. Return to school not earlier than 1.30pm to submit your money to me.
4. All sec 2 (except Nishant) and sec 3 Scouts are to attend PLTC briefing this Sat at 8am sharp. Bring along consent form and $25 camp fee.

11th PLTC consent form and Sec 1 Camp

Dear sec 2s** and 3s Scouts,

The 11th PLTC will be a 5 days Camp instead of 6 days. Download the consent form for your parent to sign. All consent forms must be submitted to me this Sat @ 8am. The PLTC is compuslory for all sec 2s** and 3s.

A briefing will be held for all sec 2s** and 3s this Sat at 8am. (before the patrol set off for DDT Sales). A subsidised Camp fees of $25 will be collected this Sat.

11th PLTC Consent Form


Dear sec 1s Scouts,

The sec 1 Camp may be cancelled this year due to adult leaders' resources constraint. However as of today, I am still trying to arrange for this Camp. A decision will be made this Sat with regards to the sec 1s Camp.

Meanwhile, I'm looking for 2 or 3 sec 1s Scouts willing to join us for the PLTC as SERVICE SCOUTS. The duties of the Service Scouts include helping the Camp Staff do groceries purchases, preparing meals for Camp Staff and helping with all logistics matters pertaining to the PLTC. You need not pay camp fee for this purpose. Let me know through email if you are interested by this Friday.

Sec 1s Crime Prevention Course assignments

Dear sec 1s,

I have decided to give you more time to submit your 2 assignments. This will be my last extension of deadline. The new deadline will be 3 June, Sat 9am. The assignments are :

1. Scrap book containing 10 newspaper articles on crime.
You are supposed to comment on how this crime could have been prevented (a short paragraph (min 50 words).
The 10 articles should be of the following categories :
a. housebreaking or shop breaking
b. robbery in Lifts/Streets
c. Snatch Theft
d. Motor Vehicle Theft
e. Outrage of Modesty
f. Handphone Theft
g. Cyber Crime or ATM related Crime
h. any articles related to elderly or any person cheated by "magic stone", or "con man".
i. any other crime not listed in the above.

You are allowed a max of 2 articles from the same category. There should be at least 5 original newspaper articles. The rest can be articles from the Internet or Library Archives. ALL articles must be Crimes that happened in Singapore.

You can decorate you Scrap book with phamplets collected from the Crime Prevention Exhibition room.

The Scrap book need not be type written. However, you need to write legibly. Don't forget to include a Content Page.

2. Poster.
- to be drawn on a A3 drawing block. You can only use poster color or crayon. No "Color Pencil" allowed.
- you can draw anything related to crime prevention. Include a simple caption or message.

The best 3 Scrapbooks and best 3 Posters will be rewarded with a small prize.

We had a meeting with the Organiser today. We will likely to go for the 16 to 17 June option i.e an overnight stay up on the summit! The cost per head is still being work out but it's likely to be kept around $80 (includes transport, seafood dinner on day 2, insurance coverage etc). There will be some subsidies but do not expect much!

SSA Donation Draw Tickets

Dear all,

The Singapore Scout Association Donation Draw Tickets are ready for collection!
You are required to meet at the Scout Den this Tues (18 April @1.45pm) for a 15 minutes general briefing before collecting the booklets from your respective sec 3 Patrol Leaders.

The Distribution of booklets will be as follows.
ALL sec 1 to 3 Scouts will each receive 5 booklets (10 tickets per book, each ticket is $2).
ALL sec 4 Scouts will each receive 2 booklets (no change from last year).

However, those Scouts who did less than a day of Job Week will receive 3 additional booklets. (Wei An, Darryl)

ALL sec1 to 4 Scouts who raised less than $200 during Job Week will be given 1 additional book. It’s not a punishment for these people. We would like this group of Scouts to do a little more for the Scout Group for the last fund raising of the year.

There will be no rewards or incentives for Donation Draw. However, you will be awarded the SSA Squirrel Award if you sell at least 7 booklets! You can only request additional books from me once your assigned number of books is completely sold!

There will be 3 collection dates for sold books and monies. The tentative dates are:
20 or 27 May, 24 June and the last date is 29 July.

ALL books not returned by the 29 July shall be considered sold to the owner of these books. ALL lost books are considered sold to the respective owners.

Every year we do not return to HQ partially sold booklets. ALL Books distributed are expected to be sold. The Scout Group will be organizing at least 1 Sales on a Sat meeting (tentatively 20 May). Usually, the sales will help Scouts to sell at least 3 books. DO NOT BURDEN YOUR PARENTS TO PURCHASE ALL THE ASSIGNED BOOKS. However, if parents would like to help to sell your assigned books, they are most welcome!

Please take this fund raising seriously! The Scout Group Target is to sell at least 300 books!

Last year’s top prize (A Subaru Matrix Car) in the Donation Draw was won by Jonathan Goh (our Sec 4 Scout last year)! Maybe you will be the winner this year?

As the sec 3 PLs prepare themselves to take over the running of the troop , I would like to share with you what Baden Powell expects Patrol Leaders to do.....

"I want you Patrol Leaders to go on and train your patrols entirely yourselves, because it is possible for you to get hold of each boy in your Patrol and make a good fellow of him It is no use having one or two brilliant boys and the rest no good at all. You should try to make them all fairly good.

The most important step to this is your own example, because what you do yourselves, your Scouts will do also. Show them that you can obey orders whether they are given by word of mouth or are printed or written rules, and that you carry them out whether your Scoutmaster is present or not. Show them that you can earn Badges for Proficiency, and your boys will follow with very little persuasion. But remember that you must give them the lead and not the push."

Crime Prevention Proficiency Badge Course 2007

I've booked a visit to the Geylang Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) on the 23 May 2007 @ 3pm.

Attendance for the visit is COMPULSORY. I suggest those who have other commitments to postpone them in view of this visit. The visit should last for 1 to 1.5hrs. You will be dismissed from the Police Centre after the visit. The nearest MRT is Paya Lebar MRT.

Please meet at the Den on 23 May 2007 at 2pm.

Dear all,

1. sec 1s and 2s , fall in at 9am instead of 8am this Sat. 8 Apr 06.
2. Do not wear your Scout Uniform when you fall in. Fall in PT attire.
3. Preserve your Uniform for the Campfire.
4. Sec 3s & 4s are to bring along their ARROW SCARF. same for Zhicong, Sean Ho, Shervin.
5. ALL (sec 1 to 4) are to bring along a piece of RAG for the campfire. Pass it to PL Washington Adriel Ong. The RAG will be use for cleaning purposes.
6. ALL to hand up consent forms IMMEDIATELY to Nicholas Pang or Xianyi if you have not done so.
